Start with decisions, not lifting. This checklist keeps documents, valuables, family items, donations, and haul-away material from becoming one mixed pile.
Make four decisions before moving anything
Create four clear groups: keep, family review, donate or sell, and remove. Use a fifth “unknown” group only when a decision-maker is unavailable. Unlabeled piles quickly become rework.
Start with records and personal items
Review desks, nightstands, file cabinets, safes, and pockets before the removal day. Set aside identification, financial records, keys, medication, photographs, jewelry, and anything named in estate instructions.
Work one room at a time
Finish decisions in a room before carrying items into the hallway. Keep exits and stairs open. A completed room gives the crew a clean loading path and gives the family a visible checkpoint.
Build a removal inventory
Count bulky pieces, appliances, box groups, garage piles, and outdoor material. Note stairs, elevators, narrow doors, locked gates, and the distance to legal parking. Photos help explain scale, but dimensions still matter for tight routes.
Leave regulated items out
Paint, solvents, fuel, chemicals, pressurized cylinders, medical waste, and unknown containers need separate guidance. Do not mix them into household removal piles. Ask the appropriate local authority or a qualified provider how to handle them.
